Makoto Koizumi
Born in Tokyo in 1960, Makoto Koizumi studied under designers Choei Hara and Shigemitsu Hara before establishing Koizumi Studio in 1990. His work spans all aspects of daily life—from architecture and furniture to the smallest household tools—each piece grounded in simplicity, craftsmanship, and quiet functionality.
Koizumi travels throughout Japan to collaborate with local artisans and explore new ways of connecting design with regional craft traditions. In 2015, he founded Wazawaza, an association dedicated to supporting and revitalizing handcrafts. He is a Professor Emeritus at Musashino Art University and recipient of the Mainichi Design Award (2012) and the Japan Crafts Exhibition Grand Prize (2015).
